Entertainingly enough, I've heard from a reliable, first-hand source that hockey players are actually really nice compared to other athletes of other sports.

Try telling that to the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers.  Just sayin....

That's the rivalry that happens when you let s state go and have 2 competing teams.  Pennsylvania learned from this and thus only has one NFL team (All of Pennsylvania is "Steeler Nation").  Cool

I expect that when you're in a sport where you wear armor and razor blades and can arbitrarily beat your opponents till they bleed, with practically no penalty, that you could be pretty laid back as you get a great outlet for anger.

Interestingly, despite steroids and all the strength training, football and baseball have the worst fights.

I wrote a whole post about hockey being known for fighting but you're talking about "worst fights" i.e. fights that just look UGLY.

I'll agree to that.

Huge football fan, don't hold it against me.  Heck, I'm doing a panel about how most fandoms are all the same and people need to chill out and not be so defensive/elitist.  You don't have to LIKE it, but you don't have to be a jerk about it </soapbox>

Yeah, baseball players fighting is just sad to watch, unless I've been seeing the wrong fights. Football fights seem to come down to just a couple of big guys shoving each other back and forth.  Kinda lame, but in their defense these footballers are wearing a lot of armor and padding.

Hockey regularly has guys punching each other in the back, throwing elbows (and unlike basketball, no one protests), and throwing guys to the ice and wailing on them until they bleed.

Other sports need to learn from these hockey players.  There's more striking and blood in hockey than in the ufc Wink
